Square Mile Music Scene: A Rural Colorado ‘Micro-Venue’ Survives on Heart

It was never their dream to open a music venue. It began as just a casual jam session between a few people who needed their fix, in a rural Colorado town with nowhere to cut loose. Booking musicians and selling tickets was just the natural thing to do. Twenty years later, Wildwood Sounds is still putting on shows, and owners Stephen Crawford and Konnie Kenan don’t have any plans to stop. But the little town of Del Norte has changed a lot in the last few years, as Coloradans flock from front-range population centers to the more affordable and out-of-the way places to live. For Wildwood, new residents could mean new regulars. But it also means new competition, and keeping folks coming through the doors is more complicated than it used to be.
